Emalie Denton, a junior from WHS, participated in the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Legislative Shadowing Project on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Krystal Snell and Michelle Kearfott are the chapter advisors, and Mrs. Kearfott accompanied Denton to the Capital City.
Sponsored by Missouri FCCLA, the program provides an opportunity for junior and senior high school students to spend a day with their state representative, senator, or another public official at the State Capitol. Denton spent her shadowing experience with Representative Dan Houx, a Warrensburg native. Before her meeting, Denton had to prepare for the event by researching Representative Houx's responsibilities and current issues. She also attended a reception and opening session on Tuesday, February 27th. Denton discussed with Houx his most recent supported bills, toured house meeting facilities, and was introduced on the house floor. Furthermore, Denton toured the Missouri Archives and the Supreme Court Building and networked with other project participants from around the state.
The Legislative Shadowing Project, now in its 23rd year, is conducted by Missouri FCCLA, the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for the Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The Legislative Project allows students to connect their interests in law, public service, civic issues, and political processes with their education. The event is designed to help students better understand the political process and its impact on citizens.
FCCLA is a nonprofit student organization open to students grades 6-12 in family and consumer sciences education. MO FCCLA has more than 8,500 members in 300 chapters, making it the tenth-largest FCCLA state association in the nation.
