Several students were honored at our School Board meeting last week. Nellena McCauley - Silver Award at Missouri State FCCLA STAR event competition. Nellena participated in Fashion Construction and created a beautiful piece. The following DECA students participated in the largest-ever Missouri DECA State Career Development Conference from March 3-5 at Crown Center, Kansas City. Elise Lewis and Maddie Meldrem - 2nd place Sports and Entertainment Operations Research Jackson Beymer - 2nd place Accounting Applications Isabelle Polk - 2nd place Entrepreneurship Independent Business Plan Toby Plummer - 5th place Principles and Hospitality Micah Dundas - 5th place Principles of Marketing John Wu - Top 10 Business Finance Peyton Bowman - Top 10 Principles of Marketing The Tiger Shop earned Gold Re-certification. All retail students are responsible for this accomplishment. Beau Bryant and Olivia Gilkeson will represent the store for School-based Enterprise. The following students received 10th place for their participation in the 200 yard free at the State Swim Meet that was held February 15-16 at St. Peters Rec Plex, St. Peters, MO. WHS Spanish and French Students participated in the annual World Language Competition at UCM organized by Knob Noster High School on April 15th. We are very happy to announce that our Spanish students received first place overall out of 11 schools participating, and French students took second place overall. Educators in the Warrensburg School district completed the first year of intensive professional development for LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) Volume 1. Made up of 25 educators, participants completed the professional learning that provides in-depth knowledge and tools utilized in reading instruction. These individuals included Alison Mines (3rd), Stefini Colvin (SPED), Leann Lamb (5th), Chealsie Nelson (4th), Tina Venable (2nd), Faithia Gillogly (PreK), Kaitlyn Palmer (Kindergarten), Jessica McCannon (1st), Samantha Buford (1st), Kaylene Smith (3rd), Brittany Minor (5th), Tracy Shippy (Intervention), Destiny Borron (2nd), Katelyn Clark (1st), Heather Culbertson (SPED), Wendy Hunt (1st), Audrey Thomas (2nd), Stephanie Mundwiller (1st), Kirsten Bears (1st), Heidi Ruhnke (1st), Makayla Cohen (1st), Megan Hook (ECSE), Coleen Leonard (Kindergarten), Angie Campbell (SPED), Hannah Lochman (SPED). The LETRS professional development training is a two-year commitment. In Volume 1, which takes one year to complete, educators focus their learning on word recognition skills, including the challenges of learning to read, the speech sounds in English, phonics, and advanced word recognition. Participants complete over 70 hours of intensive learning in Volume 1, which includes reading, online modules and assessments, and four all-day in-person training facilitated by an in-district LETRS facilitator. In addition, the participants put their knowledge into practice by completing specific activities with case study students and their classes. Volume 2, which will be completed by these participants in the 24-25 school year, focuses on Language Comprehension skills, such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, and the reading/writing connection. Volume 2 includes another 70+ hours of learning through the same modalities as Volume 1.

WHS Juniors competed with another school in an essay contest hosted by West Central Electric Cooperative. Out of 29 student essays that were submitted, 7 of them broke into the final oral competition, and 6 out of 7 of the finalists are from WHS! Students and staff from Warrensburg School District participated in Girls in STEAM Exploration Day at Whiteman AFB last week. Students got to fly drones, control robots, create Operation games, use microscopes, and meet inspiring women in STEM careers like Air Force Chief Scientist Dr. Coleman and Global Air Strike Chief Scientist Dr. Senft.
