BUILDING PROFILE

South East School serves as the kindergarten center for the Warrensburg R-VI School District. The traditional, one story design of the building makes it particularly well suited to young children and readily accessible to children with special needs. There are fourteen classrooms, a gymnasium with a partial stage area, and an office area within the original structure. There are also two large mobile units.  One of the mobile units houses SE Title Program, Social Worker, Speech Class, and Occupational Therapy.  The other mobile units house SE Library, Computer Lab, and ELL Class (English Language Learners). We are housing our Music and Art Programs in the same classroom, The Fine Arts Room, with an alternated schedule.

South East Elementary is 22,000 square feet in area and sits upon a lot that covers approximately 4 acres. The outdoor play space is especially appropriate for kindergarten aged children. There is a large, grass covered, play area that has traditional playground equipment and a picnic shelter house. Additionally a paved blacktop area is available for organized games. There are currently fourteen classrooms of kindergarten aged children in the building. The current enrollment at South East is 275 students. The Warrensburg R-VI School District has traditionally kept kindergarten class sizes at a maximum enrollment of 21 students.

Developmentally appropriate practice is the focus of the curriculum for the all day kindergarten program at South East School.  Benchmarks and Grade Level Expectations are embedded in the daily activities demonstrated by South East students.  The students have many opportunities to develop skills in beginning reading, writing, and math.  Children in the kindergarten also have a full program of study in the areas of social studies, science, music, art, library/computer lab, and physical education.  Classrooms are equipped with materials and supplies that encourage children to explore and learn within the classroom environment.  Teachers plan lessons and deliver curriculum in a variety of ways to accommodate the individual needs of the child. A great resource to use for children working with math skills is www.eduplace.com/kids (Houghton Mifflin Math).  Another great resource to use for reading is www.macmillanmh.com (MacMillan McGraw-Hill).

PROGRAMS

South East School provides services through Title I for children who are experiencing delays in reading and math skills. The Warrensburg R-VI School District conducts a screening for 3, 4, and 5 year old children each spring. Children who are age appropriate for kindergarten and have qualifying scores on the screening instruments are eligible for placement in Title I classes. The School district also provides services for children who have handicapping conditions under state and federal laws.  South East also provide ELL (English Language Learners) for those children who qualify through a profile of interviewing and assessments.
