Budget message:
As a school district we are entering a difficult time with respect to our operating budget. Although we currently maintain approximately 16% in reserves, revenues have declined both at the state level and locally. We continue to receive information from the state about lower than projected sales tax and income tax revenues. Recent projections indicate that we will see at least a 2% reduction in state funding for the current (2009-10) fiscal year. We will likely see a 5-6% reduction in state aid for 2010-11 and possibly even less funding for 2011-12. Additional state cuts may occur in the Parents as Teachers program and transportation as well as in other categories by July 2010.
In light of this revenue trend, the Board of Education has approved budget reduction items for 2010-11. These items are listed below with their estimated savings based on current information. These items are listed as tier one reductions. The Board continues to consider other tier one items as well as items listed as tier two and tier three. It is the hope of the Board to prioritize tier two and tier three reductions should these become necessary in coming months.
